Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to preserving and promoting cultural heritage, following his attendance at the vibrant Fanti Carnival held at the Tafawa Balewa Square in Lagos.
Describing the event as a “lively showcase of culture,” the governor highlighted the colourful displays, coordinated parades, and energetic performances that brought the historic festival to life. According to him, each participating group demonstrated a unique blend of identity, choreography, and tradition, reflecting the richness of Lagos’ cultural landscape.

Sanwo-Olu noted that the participation of long-established communities such as Campos, Lafiaji, Okoo-Faji, Okepopo, Olowogbowo, Epetedo, and Isale-Eko added deeper historical significance to the carnival, reinforcing its role as a unifying cultural platform. The event featured a mix of music, dance, and elaborate costumes, with strong participation from young people whose performances injected energy and creativity into the celebration.

The governor emphasized that the Fanti Carnival represents an important aspect of Lagos’ heritage that must be sustained for future generations. He stressed that cultural festivals not only preserve history but also strengthen community bonds and foster a shared sense of identity. The Fanti Carnival, one of Lagos Island’s historic cultural events, continues to serve as a major attraction, showcasing the city’s rich Afro-Brazilian heritage while contributing to its growing cultural tourism profile.
